New statutory guidance

The Department for Education (DfE) recently published new statutory guidance setting out a framework for the provision of support to family and friends carers. Aimed at local authorities, social workers and other social care staff the guidance makes clear that the estimated 300,000 children currently living in family and friends care should receive the support they and their carers need to safeguard and promote their welfare.

The guidance also requires local authorities to haveĀ a policy on family and friends care, to identify a named lead responsible, and sets out what local authorities and their partners should do to deliver effective services to children and young people who are living with family members or friends.
