Children and Social Work Bill: House of Lords Second Reading Briefing
Grandparents Plus welcomes the Children and Social Work Bill as an important opportunity to improve outcomes for children who cannot live with their birth parents. However as drafted the Bill focuses only on children who are or have been in the care system and ignores those who cannot live with parents who are brought up by family members outside of the care system. We have outlined our concerns and the changes we would like to see in the Briefing paper below.
Children and Families Bill
Grandparents Plus are trying to ensure that kinship carers are not overlooked in the Children and Families Bill. We are concerned that measures designed to increase the number and speed of adoptions could mean placements with the family are not given the necessary precedence. We also feel this is an ideal opportunity to introduce a period of paid leave for kinship carers when they take on children, thereby helping them to stay in the labour market.
Welfare Reform Bill
Grandparents Plus is working with other organisations in the Kinship Care Alliance to lobby for concessions for family and friends carers in the Welfare Reform Bill. You can download a copy of the Commons 2nd Reading Briefing below and can find out more about how to support our What if we said no? campaign here.
