The Grandparents Group was started over a decade ago by the Bridge Project, a drug service operating in Bradford that supported service users as well as their families and the local community.

In this book, grandparents talk in detail about their children's addiction and the challenges they face when raising their grandchildren. They look at how professionals and services have at times helped and not helped. These candid stories also explore how moving to live with grandparents can be experienced by both child and carer as simultaneously a gain and a loss.

The stories offer support, and the book also includes professional advice to encourage grandparents to acknowledge their value, accept their limitations, develop realistic expectations about what they can and cannot achieve, and recognise that all successes should be celebrated.

Lucy Peake, our Chief Executive, shares her thoughts on the book below:

"This book is a powerful collection of grandparents’ experiences of raising their grandchildren.

At Grandparents Plus we’re privileged to share in the lives of thousands of kinship families we work with each year – through our programmes on the ground, our advice service and our events. We know how passionate kinship carers are about doing the right thing for their children. And we also know how complex their role is, and that too often they feel invisible, unsupported and isolated.

These stories must act as a wake-up call. Jane, Dorothy, Kathleen, Amelia, Emma and Martin, Mischa, Shelly and Mary are putting everything on the line to share the heart breaking challenges, and also some of the beautiful moments, that come with being a kinship carer.

Grandparenting the Children of Addicted Parents, Experiences and Wisdom for Kinship Carers is a rallying cry for more recognition and support for kinship carers who have been taken for granted for so long."
