It is that time of year. The summer holidays are here and everyone is talking about what they have planned. Friends at school will be swapping stories about what they’re doing, and your children may be coming home wondering what you've got lined up.

The summer holidays can be a challenging time for kinship carers who are trying to live on a limited budget, so we've pulled together lots of ideas for ways the whole family can have fun without breaking the bank.

Discount cards:

The MaxCard is the UK’s leading discount card for foster families and families of children with additional needs. Families can use their Max Card at venues across the UK to get free or discounted admission.

The Family Pass gives you discounts on days out and attractions - from riding down the log flumes at your favourite theme park to braving a scary dungeon in the capital, they've got ideas for all the family!

There are lots of options out there to help you pay less for travel. Check if you can get a Railcard here or read Age UK’s guide to travel cards. There may also be local offers, such as the MCard in West Yorkshire or these discounts in London.

Free and cheap days out and holidays:

Want to get away for the summer? We've partnered with Haven so that all kinship carers can get 10% off every Haven holiday, including 10% off any of their offers. All you have to do is make sure you quote CH_GRANDPARENTS to get your discount. Find out more here

We are lucky in the UK to have lots of free and cheap days out on our doorsteps. Money Saving Expert has put together a handy guide that’s jam packed with ideas for you.

Look out for information about free days out and short breaks from Family Holiday Association (FHA). We’ll also post the latest information from them on our website and social media.

If you have a child with a long term health problem or disability, did you know you can apply for a holiday from the Family Fund? You can find more on their website.

Planning for next year

We work in partnership with Family Holiday Association as a referrer for their free holidays. All their holidays have been allocated this year due to high demand but there will be more holidays available next year. Look out on our website and social media pages for information in the New Year about when they are open for new applications and how you can contact us to apply.
