Kinship Care Week takes place in October each year. It’s a national week to raise awareness, understanding and recognition of the role of kinship carers. It’s an opportunity to thank and celebrate kinship carers, and to raise their profile across the country.

Kinship Care Week was started by our friends at Kinship Carers Liverpool and identified as a national priority at a Reimagining Kinship Care social design workshop led by Grandparents Plus and Bristol University in 2017, which involved kinship carers, social workers, academics and charities working with kinship carers. Kinship carers said they wanted to be recognised, like foster carers and adopters, with a national awareness week.
In 2018 Grandparents Plus joined forces with Kinship Carers Liverpool to give the week a national impact and it has gone from strength to strength. Many of the organisations on the Kinship Care Alliance – Adfam, CFAB, CoramBAAF, Family Rights Group, and Kinship Carers UK – are part of our working group to spread the word about the challenges that kinship carers face and how this needs to change.
If you are a kinship carer, join our kinship community or if you work with kinship carers, join our kinship professionals network to be the first to hear about plans for 2021.
Thank you to all the kinship carers who celebrated kinship care week 2020 and helped create a photo collage to show the diversity of kinship care!
