We welcome the additional investment to the Adoption Support Fund announced yesterday by the Secretary of State for Education which means it will now be available until March 2021.

For the kinship carers with Special Guardianship Orders eligible to apply for the Adoption Support Fund (where the child was looked after by the local authority immediately prior to the order being made), this is often the only way they can fund therapeutic support for the children in their care. There must be immediate efforts to raise awareness about the fund among special guardianship families and social workers.

In the longer term we believe that the fund should:

  • support all children living under special guardianship order arrangements
  • be renamed to ensure that special guardianship families understand it is for the, and the funding must be adequate to meet their needs.
