Grandparents Plus welcomes the Education Secretary’s announcement of £8 million in funding to support special guardianship and adoptive families during the coronavirus crisis.
The funding through the Adoption Support Fund means local authorities and regional adoption agencies will be able to buy services from voluntary sector providers, such as telephone support for special guardians and virtual peer to peer support. The government expects local authorities and regional adoption agencies to ensure that any funding sought includes services to eligible special guardian families.
Lucy Peake, chief executive at Grandparents Plus said:
‘At the start of the coronavirus crisis we recognised the impact the dramatically changing situation could have on special guardianship and other kinship families, and that they would need tailored advice, practical resources and support from people they trust.
‘Grandparents Plus is proud to work in partnership with local authorities in London, West Yorkshire, the North East and the Midlands to deliver our Kinship Connected support service for special guardians and independent evaluations show the positive impact of the intensive one-to-one support for families, peer support groups and tailored advice we provide.
‘This funding means there is an opportunity for local authorities to rapidly extend support for special guardians at a time when so many carers face significant financial, practical and emotional challenges. Our expert project workers are already delivering an adapted service, providing specialist and tailored support via telephone and online, with most peer support groups running virtually. We look forward to working with local authorities to provide much needed support for special guardians over the coming months.’
